Tile Replacement
Definition
Tile replacement is the process of removing cracked, broken, or deteriorated individual roof tiles and installing matching replacement tiles to maintain the integrity and weatherproofing of the roof surface.
Understanding Tile Replacement
Individual roof tiles can crack or break due to foot traffic during maintenance, impact from falling branches, hail damage, or gradual deterioration from freeze-thaw cycling and UV exposure. A cracked or broken tile compromises the waterproofing of the roof at that point — while the sarking (if present) may provide temporary protection, water can eventually penetrate into the roof space, damaging insulation, ceilings, and structural timbers. The tile replacement process involves carefully lifting the overlapping tiles above the damaged tile to release it from the battens, removing the broken tile, and sliding a matching replacement tile into position. The surrounding tiles are then re-seated to ensure correct overlap. On older roofs, sourcing matching replacement tiles can be challenging, as the original profile or colour may no longer be manufactured. In these cases, tiles may be sourced from salvage yards, or a close match may need to be accepted. In Gippsland, Town & Country Roofing carries a stock of common tile profiles for immediate replacement. During a roof restoration, all cracked and broken tiles are replaced before the cleaning, re-bedding, and coating stages. The restoration coating then provides a uniform colour finish across both old and replacement tiles, so even imperfect colour matches become invisible once the membrane is applied.
