Caulking Gun
Definition
A caulking gun is a handheld dispensing tool that holds a cartridge of sealant, adhesive, or pointing compound and uses a ratchet or pneumatic mechanism to extrude the product in a controlled bead for sealing joints and gaps in roofing work.
Understanding Caulking Gun
Caulking guns are one of the most frequently used tools on any roofing job. They are used to apply a wide range of products including silicone sealant (for sealing around penetrations, flashings, and screw heads), polyurethane adhesive (for bonding flashings and components), roof and gutter sealant (for sealing gutter joints and downpipe connections), and flexible pointing compound (for re-pointing ridge caps on tile roofs). Caulking guns are available in several types. The most common is the manual ratchet gun, which uses a spring-loaded ratchet mechanism to advance a plunger against the base of a standard 300ml or 400ml cartridge. For high-volume work, pneumatic (air-powered) caulking guns provide consistent, fatigue-free dispensing. Sausage guns (also called bulk guns) use a tubular housing that accepts sealant in foil "sausage" packs rather than rigid cartridges, reducing waste and allowing the use of sealant that is not available in cartridge form. In Gippsland, Town & Country Roofing uses professional-grade caulking equipment and premium sealant products on every job. The correct sealant type is matched to each application — neutral-cure silicone for metal-to-metal joints, polyurethane for flashings requiring paintability, and specialised roof pointing compounds for ridge cap work. Proper sealant application is one of the most important details in achieving a long-lasting, leak-free roof.
